NTWON: WolfCop

As fall approaches, it only makes sense to spotlight a crazy horror movie like WolfCop. WolfCop is a movie that falls into a class of its own, as there are plenty of comedic moments coupled with scenes of brutal depravity. Following in the footsteps of other comedy-horrors like The Evil Dead and Shaun of the DeadWolfCop flies off the rails about halfway through its brief 70 minute run-time.

Here Comes The Fuzz!!!!! NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD AND BLU-RAY http://www.WOLFCOP.com It's not unusual for alcoholic cop Lou Garou to black out and wake up in unfamiliar surroundings, but lately things have taken a strange turn. Crime scenes seem oddly familiar. Lou's senses are heightened, and when the full moon is out, he's a rage-fueled werewolf.

WolfCop starts slow as they hammer the point home that the main character, Lou Garou, is possibly the worst cop in America. For reasons that are left unrevealed, he is in a constant state of drunkenness. Don't expect to have any questions answered in this movie. Just let the absurdity overtake you as the chaos unfolds.

It should be noted (and viewers should be warned) that there is some extremely graphic violence and body horror in this movie. One particularly notable scene depicts possibly the most terrifyingly realistic transformation sequence ever filmed. There's also plenty of relatively mundane human on human violence peppered in as well to remind viewers that we don't need to be werewolves to mutilate each other.

Much of the humor lies in the absurd visual gag of a werewolf dressed in a police officer's uniform doing everyday tasks like driving a car, getting laid, and shooting bad guys. Cinematically, there are many call backs to the old-school horror movies along with more modern classics. The quick cuts are especially reminiscent of Edgar Wright's visual style.

On the whole, WolfCop is a movie to watch with some good friends and strong drinks. Sometimes you'll be laughing at a joke and other times you'll be laughing because you don't know how else to process your deep discomfort. It's an absurd descent into madness that's good for a couple of laughs.

SOTW: The Batman (A Tommy Wiseau Film)

If Tommy Wiseau wrote, directed, and starred in a Batman movie...it would be a really interesting Batman movie. The Brothers Grimsby

It's been a few years since Sacha Baron Cohen has released a movie of his own, but 2016 has brought us The Brothers Grimsby (AKA Grimsby). This weekend, I went to the theater and gave SBC's latest flick a watch.

Nobby, a sweet but dimwitted English football hooligan, reunites with his long-lost brother Sebastian, a deadly MI6 agent, to prevent a massive global terror attack and prove that behind every great spy is an embarrassing sibling. Nobby has everything a man from Grimsby could want, including 11 children and the most gorgeous girlfriend in the northeast of England.

Cohen plays a working class football hooligan named Nobby Butcher that reconnects with his long lost secret agent brother. In spite of being torched by critics left and right, The Brothers Grimsby was actually a pretty good movie.

There's a strong blend of action and comedy with the classic Sasha Baron Cohen heaping spoonful of absurd nastiness. The movie opens with a particularly well choreographed first person action sequence. I was actually surprised by how well done the action scenes were throughout the tight 83 minute run time. The producers certainly spared no expense in making things as crazy and over the top as possible.

Of course, this being a Sasha Baron Cohen movie, there were plenty jokes, many of which push the envelope of basic human decency. Once scene that stands out in my memory involves an elephant and two men that need someplace to hide. I'll let you fill in the blanks from there, but I will say that it ends with the two men covered in a foreign substance that's white and sticky.

There are other scenes whose humor come from Nobby's bumbling attempts to be a secret agent. The writers take cracks at all of the classic spy tropes: gunplay, gadgets, and girls. Nobby tries his hand at these with varying degrees of success. A particularly funny scene has Nobby attempting to seduce an important target by adopting a Connery-esque accent and donning a silk robe. What nobody tells him is that the important target is actually just the maid trying to do her job.

Overall, I had a great time watching the Brothers Grimsby. Were some of the jokes off the mark? Yeah. Were some scenes depraved and disgusting? Of course. That's what you sign up for when Sasha Baron Cohen is the writer. But on the whole, I had a good viewing experience and left the theater satisfied. I can see why other people wouldn't enjoy this movie because it's definitely an esoteric subculture that Cohen is spotlighting. It's safe to say that most Americans know little to nothing about football hooligans. If you decide to sit down and give this a watch, I think you're gonna have a good time.

Black Jesus

The second coming is here. Jesus is back and blacker than ever. This Adult Swim show answers the burning question on every religious scholar's mind: What if Jesus walked among us today and was also a 6 foot tall black man wearing a wig? The answer is Black Jesus.

I had to see this show just for the premise alone. I immediately became hooked on watching and have since plowed through the first and second season.

The most engaging aspect of Black Jesus is how believable all of the interactions with Jesus are. Some people dismiss him as a false prophet or a crazy person. Others acknowledge his role as the son of God, but demand that he use his divine powers to further their own selfish ends. Then there are the ones who hang out and smoke blunts with him and let him crash on their couch sometimes.

Created by Aaron McGruder, it also features Boondocks veterans Charlie Murphy and John Witherspoon, who serve as the primary antagonists Vic the Landlord and Lloyd the Homeless Guy. Slink Johnson plays the titular Black Jesus and brims with sunshine as Jesus tries to spread love and kindness among his slacker/stoner friends living the struggle in Compton.

Overall,  Black Jesus is a funny show with a ton of heart. It's not overly preachy and not even as outlandish as some of the other stuff on Adult Swim once you get over the name/premise. Both seasons are streaming now on AdultSwim.com for your viewing pleasure.

Another Period

It's been a big summer for TV. Lots of new shows are breaking into the evening line ups. We've got the new season (version?) of HBO's True Detective sliding in nicely at the Sunday 9pm power-slot. We've got Hannibal Burress' new show Why? coming in on Wednesday nights. But there's one new show that I'm particularly excited for: Tuesday evening's Another Period.

Prep the flashbulbs: On June 23, a new level of class is coming to Comedy Central. Watch more Another Period: http://on.cc.com/1HuAQft The Comedy Central app has full episodes of your favorite shows available now. http://on.cc.com/1e85GN8

Another Period is the brainchild of stars Riki Lindholm and Natasha Leggaro. To put it simply, this show is hilarious. Both Lindholm and Leggaro have extensive backgrounds in comedy: Lindholm with her work in the band Garfunkle and Oats and Leggaro with her stand-up comedy, most notably her appearance on the Roast of Justin Bieber.

This show is completely stacked with comedy powerhouses. David Wain. Michael Ian Black. David Koechner. And that's not even counting the cameos. It seems like everyone who is anybody is going to make an appearance on this show, which makes sense considering Ben Stiller's production company Red Hour is the one paying the bills. So far we've gotten Thomas Lennon, Jessica Chaffin, Rich Fulcher, Tim Heidecker, and Jack Black (in this week's episode)

Taking place in early 1900's  Rhode Island, Another Period centers on the wealthy Bellacourt family, with Riki and Natasha playing Beatrice and Lillian Bellacourt.  The Bellacourts are a family of wealthy idiots, similar to another family of wealthy idiots that currently occupy the spotlight.  So far, there have only been three episodes, so it's difficult to suss out where or not there will be a season long plot arc. As it stands now, it looks like things will come to some kind of head at the end of the season.

The writing is particularly biting when it comes to social satire, lampooning things like income inequality and rape culture without coming off as overly preachy. It's more of a light peppering of criticism among ridiculous situations and physical comedy rooted in the absurdity of history.

I know it's only been a few episodes, but Another Period is quickly becoming my favorite series of the summer. It doesn't show any signs of simmering down. Watch this show and you're gonna laugh, it's as simple as that. Check out one of my favorite scenes below:
